The “Perceptions, Beliefs, and Behaviors Affecting Early Diagnosis of Breast Cancer in Türkiye” research study is one of UNITAR’s Value-Based Health Project, conducted in Türkiye between August 2023-October 2024 under the leadership of the Marmara University Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Family Medicine Department’s  academic staff and researchers.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women globally and in our country, but is also one of the most treatable cancers when detected early.

In 2007, Türkiye implemented its National Cancer Control Program with the publication of the first National Screening Standards. The program aims to:

1. Reduce the number of cases through preventive strategies,
2. Reach 70% of the target age group with community-based screening, and

• Increase the survival rate and quality of life by detecting cases at an early stage.

In this study, the functioning and application of Türkiye’s National Breast Cancer Screening Program, as well as the factors, obstacles, and problems influencing its implementation, were examined in five socio-demographic regions of Türkiye, ranging from rural to urban areas. The screening program targeted women aged 40-69, family physicians and healthcare professionals, and KETEM health care workers. The study identified effective interventions and solution-oriented suggestions.

We hope that all the project’s study findings shared in this report will be contribute to improving breast cancer screening and early diagnosis programs, and help all women to live healthier lives.
